READING STRATEGY - DECODING MULTISYLLABIC WORDS

I want to introduce you to I Can Read Gigantic Words! - an advanced decoding strategy that really works!

This method for decoding multisyllabic words is especially useful for older readers who are progressing in their reading development. They're encountering longer, more complex reading passages and, let’s face it - GIGANTIC words!

The basic concept is simple.  Readers learn to
recognize and know how to pronounce the recurring word parts that make up multisyllabic words in the English language.

Then, they are trained to spot the parts inside gigantic words, thus
reducing the number of parts, or chunks, they need to identify, pronounce and sequence.

This is
especially helpful for dyslexic readers, who often have difficulty successfully sequencing multiple parts inside words.

Let's look at the word, diminished

Instead of needing to identify and pronounce 10 individual letters, readers need only identify and sequence 4 small words or word parts :

  • dim
  • in
  • ish
  • ed

If a reader already knows how to pronounce and easily recognizes these word parts, her work is instantly diminished!

BUT there's good news! When readers look for small words and word parts they already know, the opportunity for failure is dramatically reduced!

And the possibility of succeess becomes very real!
